Steve Cox, Kentucky Regional Match
Official, gave a sigh of relief as rain arrived Friday morning after 18 weeks of drought.
After the morning rain subsided, airgun competitors, mostly pre-charged, displayed their
new stocks and elegant metal finishes as they engaged in the site-in process. On Saturday,
12 spring and gas piston shooters arrived at the pre-match site-in.
Saturday's morning course began with a yellow (32 shots) course and a
blue (36 shots) course. Two groups of airgunners were formed to shoot each course. After a
complimentary lunch, provided by the BGAC, each group returned to complete the next color
course.
The blue course seemed a bit easier as compared to the yellow course.
The course presented multiple 35 to 45 yard targets and one very small bat target poised
on a tree limb. What made the "bat" lane difficult was each shooter had to sit
on a 20 to 30 degree slope with their back leaning downhill; some shooters remarked the
lane was "designed for Robert Crocker - a lefty's lane".
The yellow course was set with numerous 45 to 50 yard targets; one 50
yard "bird on a fence post" target had an unbelievable ½ inch kill zone. To add
to the difficulty of this shot, there was "Kentucky windage" of 5 to 8 mph that
lingered for most of Saturday's match. [A special prize was awarded to the only shooter
that hit this target twice.]
Sunday's Round 3 (32 shots) used lanes
from both blue and yellow courses with the addition of two new lanes. Lane 10 presented an
off-hand shot at 33 yards and Lane 9 had a 3/8 inch kill on a small quail sitting on a
limb at 17 yards. Even with little wind, this round remained quite challenging. With the
exception of Walt Roller, scoring 31 of 32 targets, most competitors shot in the mid 20's.
At the completion of Round 3, there were two shoot-off matches for the
Open - Class "A" division. Stylie Edward and Ken Hughes shot head to head for 1st
and 2nd place positions with Stylie Edward winning the shoot-off. Thomas
Itterly and Bob Duncan shot four, nail biting, shoot-off rounds to determine a 3rd
place winner. In their fourth shoot-off round, Steve Cox entered a very difficult field
target, with reducer, resulting in Thomas Itterly breaking the tie.
All 22 shooters seemed to enjoy the
Regional match including Steve Cox. Door prizes were awarded at random with a special
prize presented to the only shooter to hit the ½" 50 yard target twice on the yellow
course.
Special thanks to Steve Cox and the match volunteers that made the
event such a success.
