Two days were set aside for site-in on a well designed course of paper, bell,
and metal spinner targets. Pink paint balls were placed at 50 yards creating modern
artworks against black and white back panels. There were 28 competitors registered for the
Precharged Class and 8 shooters for the Piston Class. Seven state teams of three to four
shooters each were assembled with match officials using the top three shooter scores for
team placement.
Saturday's
competition was divided into two 30 shot courses (Beagle Run-Green and Spaniel
Lane-Yellow). Each course held 15 targets requiring two shots per target with the average
target distance at 29 yards. Two groups of airgunners were assembled to shoot each course.
Airgunning Atlanta provided lunch for match participants and their guests. After lunch,
each group reassembled to shoot the opposite course.
The
Beagle Run-Green course seemed easier as compared to the Spaniel Lane-Yellow course. The
course was designed around short to medium ranged targets, but also had one tough long
shot. Targets included a cobra snake target with a 1/2 inch kill-zone set at 24 yards;
lane one's rat in a tree at 26 yards provided a very challenging 1/2 inch kill-zone; and
lane five's black rabbit with 1 inch kill-zone positioned at 49 yards.
The
Spaniel Lane-Yellow course introduced more long ranged shots. A Cajun Spring Nationals
type crawfish (small kill-zone) was positioned at 20 yards; and Lane 10 sported a squirrel
target with a 1 inch kill-zone positioned at 46 yards. The squirrel target resulted in
almost every shooter hitting high at the 46 yard target indicating that most shooters
ranged the target near 50 yards.
The
Beagle Run-Green course leaders were Tom Itterly and Ken Hughes with scores of 29 of 30
targets. Robert Crocker, Bill Isaac, Ken Ward and David Still trailed Tom and Ken by one
point (28 of 30 targets). On the Spaniel Lane-Yellow course, Wade Sutherland led the pack
with a score of 29 or 30 targets. One point behind Wade was Robert Crocker and Ken Ward
with scores of 28 of 30 targets.
At the
completion of Saturday's matches, there was a three-way tie for Overall Match Champion
(Robert Crocker, Wade Sutherland, and Ken Ward) each with scores of 56 of 60 targets. Tom
Itterly was two points behind the match leaders with a score of 54 of 60 targets. Steve
Cox and Roz Sumpter tied in the Piston Class with scores of 38 of 60 targets with Clifford
Smith a close second with a score of 37 of 60 targets.
Sunday's
Georgia Bulldog-Red course (40 shots) used the combination of both Saturday's courses
again requiring two shots per target. Some targets were repositioned and new targets were
introduced to the course. Sunday's two off-hand targets were the deciding factor for many
shooters' match position results. The off-hand targets included a very difficult, tree
mounted target with a 1 3/4 inch kill-zone set at 36 yards and a 25 yard, fox target with
a 2 inch kill-zone.
At the
completion of Sunday's match, there were three shoot-off matches determing Overall Match
Winner and Open Class-First Place; Open Class-Third Place and Open Class-Forth Place; and
Open Class-Fifth Place and non-awarded Sixth Place. Robert Crocker defeated Tom Itterly in
the shoot-off for Overall Match Champion; Wade Sutherland defeated Ken Ward for Open
Class-Third Place; and Ken Hughes defeated Tommy Garland for Open Class-Fifth Place.
Awards
included five place trophies for Open Class and Piston Class and an Overall Match
Champioin award. A First Place award was also presented to the highest scoring State team.
Robert
Crocker and Tom Itterly both scored 92 of 100 targets. As a result of their tie-breaker
shoot-off match Robert Crocker won this year's Georgia Southern Regionals Overall Match
Champion award.
Open
Class awards were presented to Tom Itterly winning First Place. Bill Isaac captured the
unchallenged Second Place position with a score of 89 of 100. Wade Sutherland's shoot-off
match won him Third Place; Ken Ward placed Forth; and Ken Hughes' shoot-off match earned
him Fifth Place.
Surprisingly,
no shoot-off matches were evident in the Piston Class. Steve Cox clearly won the Piston
Class with a score of 66 of 100. Roz Sumpter took Second Place with a score of 63 of 100.
Third, Forth, and Fifth Places were captured by Clifford Smith, James Sumpter, and Albert
Otter.
The
Georgia State Team won the State Team event with a score of 255 of 300. Team-Georgia was
made up of Tommy Garland, Ken Hughs, Walt Roller, and David Still. The Florida East Team
came in second with a score of 251 of 300 targets.
Many of
the 36 shooters stated that the 1999 Georgia Southern Regionals was the best match they
had ever attended. The competitors were particularly appreciative of the availability of
free air and tournament caps compliments of Airgunning Atlanta and match sponsors, The
Dive Shop IV and ProSelect Resources, Inc.
