AA Field Target Match

Match Results, March 10, 2001

Competitors Welcome Spring Match with 3-tie Scores

by David Still

With spring right around the corner, Airgunning Atlanta had an excellent attendance at Saturdays monthly match.  A beautiful clear, yet slightly windy day, greeted the ten competitors that shot the 40 target course.  The course was shortened to allow for a club meeting to discuss the bid to AAFTA for the 2001 U.S. Field Target National Championship match to hopefully be held in Atlanta at the 1996 Olympic shooting complex in October.

Doug Vinson, again, shows the club that he has been practicing with his well balanced Pro-Target. Doug scored a 37 of 40 (92.5%) to become Saturday's match champion. Way to go Doug! AA welcomes our newest match visitor, David Freeborn, who shared David Still's Pro-Target during the match and a warm welcome to Kevin Allen, returning for his second competition shooting the Spring Class using a TX-200.

In the Precharged Class, Ken Hughes took First Place scoring 34 of 40 (85%). Surprisingly, David Freeborn (new to Field Targeting shooting) tied with Tommy Garland to capture Second Place with a score of 29 of 40 (72.5%). David was using a B&L 8-32x that had just been mounted on the Pro-Target and calibrated earlier that morning. We will keep an eye on David's progress. Great shooting David. David Simpson and David Still tied for Third Place with scores of 26 of 40 (65%).

In the Spring-Piston Class, Joel Hansel secured First Place with a score of 26 of 40 (65%). Bennie Davis and Kevin Allen tied for Second Place with scores of 12 of 40 (30%).

AA to Bid on US Nationals

Match Date - October 5 - 7, 2001

American Airgun Field Target Association (AAFTA) has informed Airgunning Atlanta that they may bid on the 2001 US Field Target National Championship match to be held in October. If Atlanta wins the bid, the 2001 national match will be held at the Tom Lowe Shooting Grounds, previously known as Wolf Creek Olympic Shooting Complex, the shooting venue site for the 1996 Olympics. This match location is near the Atlanta airport and has the capability of over 100 shooting lanes covering three different shooting environments. Couple this with a 50 position, 50-meter indoor/outdoor sight-in range, is sure to please any field target competitor.

During the three-day national match, field target competitors may test their shooting abilities at the 60 position 10-meter airgun range, the 50 position 25-meter range, or the 50 position 50-meter range. All ranges offer auto-scoring equipment providing the shooter immediate results after every shot. Also, each shot is captured on a paper tape printout that the competitor can take with them after the competition round.

Airgunning Atlanta has secured the services of an Olympic shooting coach for Friday and Saturday afternoons shortly after each of the US Nationals 40-shot rounds. Friday afternoon, the coach will begin with a 10-meter airgun exhibition followed by instructional training to interested field target competitors on 10-meter off-hand shooting. Saturday afternoon, after the second 40-shot National round, the coach will serve as a range officer for a 50-meter, sitting position, mini-match. This mini-match is set up as a 25-shot, fixed range, course with each shooter having 15 practice shots, then 10 shots for score. The ten-point bulls-eye (10-ring) is only 1/2 inch in diameter at 50 meters. Thanks to the auto-scoring targets, each competitor will immediately know the results of after each shot.

Keep your fingers crossed for the Nationals to be held in Atlanta.
